CERT (Community Emergency Response Team)

Hidden Hills CERT Team

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a group of highly trained resident volunteers who meet regularly and are prepared to assist first responders and the City of Hidden Hills during large-scale emergencies or natural disasters. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department’s CERT training program, developed in collaboration with FEMA, provides basic fire safety and lifesaving skills. Funded by the City, it offers residents the opportunity to play an active role in ensuring the safety of their families and neighborhoods.

The program educates residents about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact Hidden Hills and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

WHY  JOIN CERT?
Joining your neighbors on CERT is fun and rewarding and you get to learn basic but critical life saving skills from the County’s top instructors.

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT OF TIME?
You get out of it what you put into it but meetings and training only take up an hour or two a month. Hidden Hills CERT meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month.

WHAT TYPES OF PEOPLE DO WE NEED?
While no specific prior talents are required, certain skills and traits can greatly benefit a CERT team. CERT training equips you with the necessary skills, but the most important qualities are a willingness to learn and a commitment to keeping your community safe.

WHAT ARE YOU OBLIGATED TO IN AN EMERGENCY?
Nothing, but if you feel able and you want to help out your community in the unfortunate event there is a disaster, as someone who has received training you get to help out First Responders and City leaders.

Become a Hometown Hero and join a team that makes a difference in your community. For more information, or to find out how you can become involved in CERT, please contact Mike Grant, Public Safety and Emergency Services Manager.

How Drones Aid Disaster Recovery

Through striking photographs and powerful video footage our guest speaker, Mr. Adam Rider, who brings extensive firsthand experience responding to major disasters across the world, will showcase how modern drone technology has transformed the way search and rescue teams operate. These tools dramatically improve their ability to locate survivors, assess hazardous environments, and accelerate recovery efforts. His presentation offered a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how innovative tools are reshaping emergency response and strengthen CERT’s mission here in Hidden Hills.

Understanding Roles and Responsibilities

The City of Hidden Hills, in partnership with the Hidden Hills Community Association, hosted a Public Safety Town Hall titled Understanding Roles and Responsibilities. The event brought residents together with key public safety partners, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Covered 6.

Speakers included members of the City Council; representatives from the Hidden Hills Community Association; Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Captain Dustin Carr; and Covered 6 CEO Chris Dunn. Each outlined their agency’s role in protecting Hidden Hills and explained how coordination among the partners helps strengthen community safety.

One important topic of discussion was the responsibility of personal home security and how residents can better secure and protect their own homes. Speakers clarified the distinction between individual security measures and the role of Covered 6 in serving the community. In addition, there was a detailed discussion of Covered 6’s drone deployment practices, including when and why drones are used, which drew strong interest from attendees.

Residents had the opportunity to ask questions and learn how local law enforcement and security teams collaborate to serve the community.

The presentation was recorded and can be viewed above. If you watch on YouTube, you can use the chapter timestamps to jump directly to specific speakers or questions of interest.

Are You Ready For A Disaster?

We never know when a disaster will occur or even what it will look or feel like to us or the people around us. This can make us feel powerless and out of control. Knowing what is “normal” and understanding how you and your family may feel before, during and after a disaster can help YOU and THEM recover with greater ease. This special visual presentation on Disaster Psychology was led by Public Safety & Emergency Services Manager Mike Grant, with special guest Los Angeles County Fire Department Assistant Chief Drew Smith.

Transforming Public Safety

As our city has evolved, so have our challenges. A big thank you to all who joined us for the city’s Public Safety Event on April 30th. The Hidden Hills theater was packed with residents expressing their concern about the historically low staffing levels at our local law enforcement agencies, while learning about a new public safety program initiated by the City Council that strengthens the city’s defenses against crime and enhances preparedness for any looming emergency – fostering a safer city for all.

If you missed the event, the presentation covered:

  • The City Council’s proactive measures to enhance the city’s crime prevention and emergency management efforts.
  • The introduction of Michael Grant, the City’s new Public Safety Manager.
  • Law enforcement challenges and available resources for a more connected community.
  • An overview of national and local crime statistics and what the city and association are doing to keep your family safe.
  • Essential home fortification steps.
  • Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) engagement, and future training opportunities.

The presentation was recorded and can be watched above.
