Goats Successfully Complete Fire Prevention Work

July 31, 2024

Did you spot them before they left? Approximately 275 goats ate their way through approximately 33 acres of dry brush and vegetation along the City’s northern border, completing a critical fire hazard abatement task. And they completed all their grazing in just 3 weeks.

In the past, residents have reported being able to see the goats from various trails and vantage points within the city. Please give the goats plenty of space while they are working and use caution as they are protected by an electric fence. Here are some fun facts about the goats:

  • The goats clearing the vegetation are mainly Boer goats but include Spanish and Kiko cross breeds.
  • The goats are not picky eaters. Surprisingly, they even eat Starthistle, Poison Oak, Italian Thistle and even Cactus!
  • You may notice large dogs among the goats, watching over the herd to keep them safe. Trinity and Buster are Anatolian Shepard and Great Pyrenees mixes. They are joined by three of Buster’s pups, plus Joy and Martha, who are all Anatolian-Pyrenees-Akbash mixed breeds, making them excellent guard dogs.

If you missed them, please enjoy a short video of their work and departure.
